Mario graduated from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in 2014 with a BSc in Microbiology. During this period, he did laboratory stays at both the UAB and the University of Dundee (United Kingdom), as part of his ERASMUS program. He obtained a Master’s degree in Molecular Medical Microbiology from the University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), where he met Prof. Paul William, with whom he completed his PhD in Molecular Microbiology, characterizing the role of a novel quorum sensing and virulence regulator of the human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii. Back in Spain, he obtained a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics in 2021 from the UAB. Thanks to a Margarita Salas contract, he worked as a postdoc at the UAB from 2022 to 2024, computationally characterizing protein-lipid and peptide-lipid interactions within biological membranes. In December 2024, he joined the Department of Structural and Molecular Biology (DSMB) of the Molecular Biology Institute of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC) with a Momentum CSIC contract, working on the redesign of enzymes with biomedical and biotechnological applications using a combination of computational and experimental approaches.
